Some things

1. I got a phone call on Thursday from the dad of a kid I tutor. This dad is from India and has a super strong, super adorable accent. He told me that his son was sick, and was hoping I was willing to reschedule. "Poor guy," I said, "of course we'll reschedule." The dad got really stern and said, "He is not poor. No, he's not a poor guy." This interaction gave me some cultural insight.

2. I got an invitation in the mail to join the NRA. I'm considering it. A friend once told me, "The only thing that protects a man from the government is a gun." I don't think it will ever come down to that in my lifetime, but I think the right of protecting ourselves from the government needs to stay intact. Also, I think it would be funny to have an NRA bumper sticker on my Prius.

3. I dropped a computer in my face yesterday and now the bridge of my nose is so sensitive, I can't really touch it.

4. I feel consistently great about my life. I read a biographical life story written by an 85 year old woman. She said, "I know I made mistakes by being too accepting of whatever happened to me. I did not fight back." That's where happiness comes from, I think--finding, creating and investing in the life you're psyched about living, rather the one that just sort of happens to you as you sit back and watch. (Thanks, Ayn Rand.)
